This children's book was inspired by the traumatic and unexpected loss of my sister-in-law. The story follows a family of birds that encounters the sudden death of their beloved matriarch. Using one of the young birds as a well-versed protagonist, I was looking to channel the experiences of my nieces and nephew to speak to other young children who are having trouble coping with the loss of someone who cared deeply for them. By highlighting the roller coaster of emotions, the difficult journey, and the ultimate resilience that I saw in my own family, this book is meant to showcase a balance between the blind hope and painful reality of grief.

A Story of Loss and Love

Always There

Difficult stories are textured, layered and emotional.

The unique collage style of the illustrations was chosen to reflect the fragmented and cherished memories we hold of those we’ve lost. It’s a visual and narrative approach designed to engage children; the incorporation of personal effects and memorabilia is meant to introduce familiar and comforting objects, colors and textures for this impressionable audience.

Always There is not just a story about loss; it’s about the enduring presence of love and the support system that remains, even when our loved ones are no longer with us. I believe this book fills a gap in the current landscape of grief-themed literature by offering an outlook which balances sensitivity and honesty.

Taking Flight

This deeply personal project was inspired by a loss my family experienced, and aims to explore themes of grief, love, and resilience in a style and tone that is both authentic and accessible to young readers. By not sugar coating the pain and suffering they may endure, children can process their feelings with a realistic and resilient mindset.  To learn more about the story and process, please reach out for potential collaboration.
